crookneck squash are maturing too early

My squash are only 5-6 inches long and they are already hard skin like a winter squash and have maturing seeds. I left them on the vine for about 2 weeks, but they are already maturing.

I am not sure if heat has anything to do with it, but where the squash are growing is a place that can get quite hot during the day.

Crooknecks come in many sizes, maybe you have a small cultivar. At any rate you don't want to leave them on the vine for two weeks. They size up rapidly.
