Pumpkaloupe

I just cut into the single pumpkin that we grew in our backyard, to make a Jack-o-lantern out of it for Halloween, and was struck but the smell of cantaloupe. It even tastes like an unripe cantaloupe.
However, after looking around online. Everything I have read indicates that while members of the same Cucurbitaceae family, these species do not cross pollinate. So I'm left wondering what I actually have? We did plant pumpkins and cantaloupe this year and last...but no squash, zuchini, or other gourd-like plants.
I'm facinated by the whole thing really. California can be a weird place...do I have something strange?
