Zucca's on a trellis or the ground?

Hi, this coming spring will be my first year for growing gourds, I have been buying my seeds and doing my research but I wonder if I should plant my zucca seeds so they grow up or are they ok on the ground, will they have a flat side if they grow on the ground and would that be a good thing?

Thanks for any suggestions!

I would suggest a trellis as it is a long fruit subject to curving and other odd shapes when grown on the ground.
