What are some uses for gourds??

Posted by heavenlyfarm pa (My Page) on

I am hoping to grow apple gourds and pear gourds this year as they look neat to me.(also luffa) I know about uses for luffa(sponges) but what can use the apple gourds and pear gourds for?? I know they would be great as conversation pieces and I know the one is used as a bird house but what other things do you all use them for?? As you see I am pretty new to gourds. I have already grown luffa for sponges but what about other gourds?
Any comments, crafts or uses for the gourds would be greatly appreciated!!

Bowls, baskets, bird houses, planters, decorative pots, dippers, bee hives, wind chimes, etc. If you Google "decorating gourds" you will find many sites on the how-tos and various projects - both decorative and functional (linked one of many below). There are also many art gourd vendors with sites that you can review for ideas. Their uses are only limited by your imagination. ;)

I like making musical instruments out of them also.

They are edible and some actually taste good. Luffa for example is also known as Chinese or vine okra and is used when quite young as an edible. The cucuzzi is a bottle gourd used as a zuchini substitute.
