Pampas Grass Help

I just cut back a large Pampas Grass, getting ready for Spring. I noticed that the dead inner circle is now three feet in diameter. The only green growth is in the outer ten to twelve inches. Is there anyway to restore growth in the center, or am I going to have to just replace the plant. Apparently the previous owners did not cut the plant back each winter as is required.
Thanks,
John

John, you can dig the healthy outer ring up in chunks, and replant them as new plants. Center die-out is not uncommon in large and small grasses, and not always from a failure to cut back. Cortaderia is an evergreen, and in your zone, it shouldn't have to be cut back every year.
