Carex elata 'Bowles Golden'

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone grows, Carex elata 'Bowles Golden'. I'm interested in knowing if it can grow in a full sun (West facing) area along my house foundation. What can you tell me about this plant? I'm looking for a golden grass that I can plant in front of my three burning bushes and that can take the intense heat. Any suggestions?

IF you can keep it wet enough it might do OK. I know that I could never get it to grow on the west side of my house. I have two that get full sun but both of them are sitting down in my pond with water to the top of the pot.

I am growing 'Bowles Golden' in a 'damp garden' - the only place on my property where it is happy.

I do grow Molinia caerulea 'Variegata' in a hot, full sun position at the front of my house. Not quite as tall as Bowles Golden but still gives you the yellow leaf.
This picture of M. Caerulea 'Variegata' was taken about 10 years ago in a public garden. You can see why I like it - especially combined with shrubs!

Yep, the carex is considered a "marginal" - best sited along a stream or pool or where it gets consistent moisture. Hard to give it enuf moisture in the setting you describe and still keep burning bushes happy. I think achnatherum's suggestion is an excellent one!

For some reason, most yellow or gold toned grasses seem to prefer shade and/or moist soil conditions.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Achnatherum, I'm seriously considering going with your suggestion!! I found a local nursery that sells this grass, so now its just a matter of buying them and planting them out in a few weeks.
Thanks so much for your suggestion.

I live in Northern California on the coast and this plant loves my yard. I have it planted in front of the house, full sun, and it does great. It's a beautiful plant and would recommend it.
