Observations from recent travels

I just got back from visiting Southern California, where I saw Mexican feather grass, Pampas grass, and Pennisetum fountain grass varieties in landscapes. Thereafter, I was in Georgia where I only found the ubiquitous Pampas grass in the landscapes. While at the Bremen, Georgia, Wal-Mart, I found Pampas was the only large grass sold. However, it was cheap at $3.92 for a 3 gallon pot.

I am mistaken, or are Miscanthus varieties not as prevalent on the West coast or in the South? Additionally, I found clumps of Pennisetum in California that at the end of March looked like it had bloomed and was drying up. Does anyone know when Pennisetum bloom times typically occur in California?
