Too Soon To Plant Out Pennisetum Rubrum?

Hi, just purchased a couple of gallon-size purple fountain grass pots (the price was right). I'd like to get these in the ground soon, because I need them at the upper end of their height range this summer for the location I'm planning--hopefully to four feet. I plan to water them often and maybe even fertilize to get them taller--basically the opposite of what I do with my flop-prone switchgrass. So are they as tender as, say, tomato plants or petunias? Should I wait until mid-May, or can they take occasional temperature dips into the thirties and survive? Thanks.
