Cutting back grasses...?

Grasses are accustomed, in nature, to being grazed or burned back. When should give mine a haircut? I transplated a few (I forget thier names- forgive) and they look a bit under the weather - was wondering if I should give them a trim? I live in San Diego.

When I lived in Long Beach, I cut mine back in either January or February.

Doing so now will remove some of the new growth. But that's not important as they're grasses -- the growing point is at ground level, and they regrow. You know, just as does your lawn.

So if you don't cut them back now you'll have to live with the ratty appearance through the growing season.
