Is c utting back last year's dead growth necessary

I got "Karl Foester" , Miscanthus "morning glory" and

"gracillimus". I left the dead growth through the winter for

winter interest. I heard from a gardening radio show host who

suggest you leave last year's growth alone. He said the new

growth will grow in, the contrast with the old growth looks

good, and that the old growth will eventually drop off on it's

own and in no way affect the new growth. Has anyone tried this.
