Did I kill the liriope?

I purchased my new home in November so I've been enjoying discovering new things in the gardens. I have several liriope. We did not cut them back in the fall because they were still very green and looked great. We waited until March. Some of them, we couldn't cut very low to the ground, because they were incredibly thick and hard to get through with the hedge trimmers. Now, it's growing back, but unevenly. It's mid-May, so maybe this is normal? I am ready to mulch and it just looks like trash. Did we cut too late? Is this normal? Would love some help! Never had this stuff in any of my other homes.

Thanks!
