Looking for Attractive Somewhat Invasive Ornamental Grass

I have a backyard plot that is about 200' x 100'. I treat it as a low maintenance spot in my yard. I don't water or fertilize it and I mow it once a year in the late fall.

I've tried planting wildflowers here but the native grasses and weeds eventually crowd out the wildflowers after a couple of years.

I'd like to experiment with planting a few types of ornamental grasses that will gradually take over the area. The area is about 150 feet from my house so I'd like the grasses to be attractive.

What ornamental grasses should I investigate?

I would contact these folks and/or visit their web site. They have lots of good information about grasses and prairie plants for various habitats and purposes.

A grass that will do what you are asking is Spartina pectinata which is commonly called Prairie cord grass. It's a perennial running grass (determined spreader) with arching sharp-edged leaves. The leaves are dark green and edged in bright yellow-gold. It grows to about 4-6 feet and is tolerant to zones 4-9. The last time I looked, www.prairienursery.com had the seed.
