Good afternoon folks,

I really like purple fountain grass. Are there perennial cultivars though that's at least hardy to zone 4?

I don't know of any. I think the closest you'll come will be one of the red Panicum cultivars.

Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum' - Purple Fountain Grass is not perennial to zones colder than zone 7 but they are so gorgeous that they are worth buying and planting every year! There is nothing like them!

Pennisetum Rubrum is only hardy to zone 9, maybe 8b. Pennisetum purpureaum Prince, Princess, Princess Molly and Princess Caroline are all hardy to zone 7.

For a zone 5 grass that has good burgundy coloring, Panicum Shenandoah and Imperata Red Baron.

Has anyone tried digging them up in fall and putting them in the darkest place in the basement and maybe watering them 1 time a month?
