Need help - Miscanthus not looking good...

I dug out a large clump of my friend's Miscanthus gracillimus that had leafed out and grown about 2 feet tall. The clump turned out to be larger than I thought, so I cut the clump into 3 (which was quite a task!) and planted one and put the other 2 into pots for another friend. I watered them well, and the next day went out to check on them, and the grass blades were all dried up and flopped over. I thought miscanthus was pretty tough. I was rather dismayed when I saw it looking completely dead. My neighbor has a different variety that he divided, and left the clumps laying around until his relatives came and picked them up a couple days later.

I put the potted ones in the shade and I've been watering it every day. Did I kill this grass????

My bet is the Miscanthus will survive. It may not look as good as usual in the first season, due to transplant shock, but they are really durable critters.

Last October, as an experiment, I cut down and dug up an 8" Miscanthus crown. It was a two year old volunteer which had out-grown it's location. My original intent was to scrap it, but instead, I stuck it in a hole in a vacant nursery bed. I dug it out by slanting my spade in, on all 4 sides, and took a very shallow and narrow rootball, no wider than the crown of the plant.

So far, it's still alive. The first sprouts are around the outside of the crown, as would be expected, but my hunch is it will be fine by next year. It's probably a 'gracillimus,' but I also get a variety of volunteers from 'New Hybrids,' and they vary a lot in habit and blade width.

I have a Gracillimus that suffered badly from last winter - the middle of the clump appears dead, but there is growth in 3 spots along the clump edge. Should I divide the plant or just wait and see?

timbu..don't do anything now. Next spring, when the grass starts to show its first signs of growth, cut it back. Then divide it, concentrating on the parts with the thickest growth. They will be at the outer perimeter of the clump.
