Can I cut back my Pony Tails right now?

Hello,

I have several clumps of Pony Tails Grass (Stipa or Nassella tenuissima, depending on which botonist you ask) and after a couple seasons ago, I quickly learned just how vigorously self seeding these grasses are.

I once tried combing the seeds out with a dog's flea brush which actually worked well, but it was a royal pain and now that I have about 50 mature clumps I don't want to go through that again.

Does anyone know if it would be safe to cut the grasses back again like you're supposed to do in the early Spring, or would this adversely affect the plant?

Thank you =)

Nassella tenuissima is a cool season grass, which goes dormant during the summer, after it blooms. I should think you could give it a haircut now, and it'll regrow foliage when the weather cools in the fall. I have about a dozen clumps, and as far as I can tell, have gotten no self-seeding yet, so I'll leave them be unless they get ratty looking as the summer goes on.

I no longer sell this grass anymore as its propensity to self-seed has made it close to an invasive species here. IME, no other OG, with the exception of Millium effusum and ribbon grass, poses quite as aggressive a behavior in the PNW as does this grass.
