Ornamental Grass

help with variegated reed grass

Greetings everyone.
I moved into my home 4 years ago with a large stand of variegated reed grass. I have found it is an attractive grass, but is spreading like mad and the original owners put it in the middle of the yard. In the middle of it rose of sharon and daylilies.

I had read on here a year or two ago about controlling it with a barrier, but I cannot locate the post right now. Anyway if I remember someone was digging a barrier around it and pouring concrete in the barrier. What I am wondering is was this effective at controlling it and how deep was the barrier dug.

Get some 18" bamboo barrier. It's extremely heavy duty plastic, and you bury it in a trench all around the stand of Arundo.

You can also contain it by mowing down the new shoots every year.

(Pssst...it's past time to cut or pull out the ugly last-year's canes.)

I will try the bamboo barrier. I wanted to try to contain it because I planned on putting in a new iris bed on the other side a few feet away. I have put in several new beds and I am starting on that area now.

Right now I just mow down new shoots. I usually knock down the old reeds in early spring but never got around to it this year.
