Purple fountain grass ...slow to grow - why?

Hi

I got Purple fountain grass from lowes more than a month ago . They were small in height...like 3". They have grown to 6" thats all in a big pot, I water often, gave m.gro and full sun too.

Why is it slooow ? I thought they grew fast ? what can i do to speed up growth?

Like the rest of us, they are waiting for summer to arrive.

I think A has Panicum on the brain these days, but has the diagnosis right. PFG is a Pennisetum, and a tropical one at that. When the heat of summer arrives, it will explode.

You're right - I really must have panicums on my mind lately!!

I wouldn't give it any ferts at all. The grass tends to be a little floppy anyway, and ferts will only accentuate that.

my question is how to keep them through the winter here in Indy? I bought 10 of them for my patio, dug through the ridiculous clay and now I am hearing that they are annuals????? I really miss my home state of FL!!!!

Not so. They are perennials.

But they are *tender* perennials.

So, in cold climates, they're grown as "if" they were annuals because, if grown as a perennial, they would die a cold death.
