Mary..which Muhlenbergia is it? There are a few, although since M. capillaris (Pink Muhly) is the most popular, I'd expect that to be in Home Despot. The species M. Capillaris is hardy to zone 5, although some of the cultivars may not be.

I can't tell you about wintering it over indoors, because I've never tried it. If it's species M. capillaris, I'd suggest leaving it in the ground, and giving it some protection from the cold. If you don't have reliable snow cover during the coldest part of winter, mulch it heavily with a coarse mulch like pine boughs and pine needles. Be sure not to plant it anywhere it will be too wet during winter.

Hi Donn,
The container reads "Muhlenbergia capillaris ".
When doing a search, it looks like it is zones 7-11.
So I doubt it would survive here in KS.

Pity, wish I had a cheat sheet to take with me when
I am shopping away from home like that.

I would imagine, that I could dig it up and keep it
in a cool location? Low sunlight?
Any suggestions? Or did I just waste my money?

Nope. It's zone 5 hardy. Check the Missouri Botanical Garden link below.

I'd still protect it in winter, but it should survive in the ground for you.

I know that many list muhly c. as a zone 5, but I have always considered it a zone 6, based on feedback from northern growers.

Donn's suggestions for winter protection are good ones. It's smart to winter protect even those grasses that are very hardy in your area, especially when cold winter temps hit and there is no snow blanket to protect.
