miscanthus dead in center

Is it OK to cut out the dead center of miscanthus and leave the rest? Would it be likely to grow into the center? I really don't want to dig the whole thing up.

It isn't likely to grow into the dead center. Your best bet would be to cut divisions from the perimeter, and then dig out the dead center, and replant one of the divisions there, and others elsewhere.
