HELP--Animal eating pennisetum

I completely freaked out today because I have a third story deck that is 30 feet off the ground and at 11am I had two healthy tall flowering pennisetums on the deck. At 1:30pm, one was totally eaten. There were 3 or 4 strands on the deck and that was it. Tonight I looked and the second plant is also gone. No one has access to this deck--no annoyed neighbors or anyone else but me.

What could have eaten it? It has to be big. Neither squirrel or robin would do that much damage in such a short time with so little waste. I have ornamental grasses all over my yard and have planted pennisetum in my hanging baskets for years--this is a first.

By the way I have tomatoes, banana trees, all types of flowering plants and this is the only thing eaten.

Very odd! Are you sure it was eaten and not taken for nesting material? I know birds will carry off cut grass material, but to have entire plants devoured on a rooftop is quite strange!
