Karl Foerster Reed Grass not blooming yet

Hello all,

I planted about a dozen KF reed grass plants late last year, and they are all doing well (except 1), having grown from small nursery plants 1" wide and about 4" tall to about twice that size...larger in a few cases.

The problem is that I expected blooms/plumes by this time since I heard KF was an early bloomer, but there is nothing yet and it is July 2nd. Any ideas? We're just north of Austin, TX and it has been a fairly hot summer so far, but, the plants look healthy. Is it possible they won't put up stalks the first year since they started so small? Has anyone else had this experience? Thanks.

KF is a cool-season grass. In your climate, it would probably have bloomed in April or maybe May. I suspect your plants were just too immature at the normal blooming time.

Here is how they look now - not great. Hoping they will bounce back. It has been a hot summer without much rain - try to water twice a week...

Mine aren't blooming (growing stalks) yet either!! Planted earlier this year, so I will hope when they are more mature they will do so. (South central Iowa)

Did they ever bloom. Mine are beautiful and healthy but no blooms! May plant and it’s September?

Same as me Sue! Planted in upstate NY in May. They look bushy and healthy but no blooms. Fingers crossed
