Help with Garden Intervention - M. Gracillimus

A few friends are coming over in a couple of weeks to help out with a garden that has gotten a little out of hand and one of the plants I'd most like to get rid of is three large (4x4ish) clumps of Gracillimus. The soil here is very friable (I live beside a creek) so that will help. I'm thinking that if I cut the grasses back hard now, it will deplete the roots as the plant puts out new growth, thus making it easier to dig up. Does that sound like it would work? I'd rather give them away than kill them with round-up, but I'd rather concentrate on another area of the garden if this is futile. Any advice would be appreciated.

TIA,

Jeanne
