The approach I've developed to pampas grass involves a lasso and a chain saw. First we encircle the clump with a rope about 3 ft. off the ground and pull it tight. Then my husband cuts off the entire clump with a chain saw as close to the ground as possible (we usually do this in the early spring before new growth begins.)

Then, using an old, already dull chain on the saw, my husband cuts down, dividing the clump into manageable sections. Then, with a sharp bladed shovel we dig around the outside of the clump and lever out the sections, one at a time. I have also known of folks who dig up the whole clump first and then divide the whole clump into smaller sections for transplanting, etc. with a sharp axe. good luck with your project. Lisa_Devon

Thank you for the rope idea! I have a monster, and I at least want to cut it back or remove it entirely. As you probably know, the reeds can really scratch you.

I just planted two in our back yard and have the cuts to prove it. I wore long sleeves, but forgot about my legs and had on capri pants. One leg really caught it!

I hope the beauty when they develop eases the pain and scars on my leg.....ha.

i have 4 huge monsters n i love em, there not so painful once you get use to dealing with them. i dont get cut up like when i first got them. n i use a lil hand clipper to cut them down lol, i know people who use the eletric hedge clippers n say they work great.
