How Low can I Cut Feather Reed Grass

Hi all. I live in Winnipeg, Canada. The past few years I had beautiful feather reed grass in many bushels in my back yard. But when the snow melted this spring I noticed that the stalks from many of them were flattened / falling over. Upon further inspection it appears voles were the culprits. They've eaten away the middles of each of the bushels during the winter under the snow and must have been nesting in the centers over the winter. I am now left with doughnut-like bushels of feather reed grass (unfortunately the middles did not fill in during the summer).

Voles are a big problem in my area. We generally cut our lawn very low before snowfall to prevent this damage. I am wondering if I should do the same with my feather reed grass this fall? Or would cutting it down too low (ie - almost to the ground) cause permanent damage to the plants?

Thanks!
