clean up

| Does anyone cut their grasses back in the fall rather than the spring. This past spring I spent hours cutting back and cleaning up dead foilage and flower stocks of my grass collection. the substatial snowfall left very little standing. I cant help thinking this cleanup would be so much easier if done in the late fall while the foilage and flower stocks are upright and not lying all over ground level. If one tied a cord around the plant at say 8" above the ground and cut thru the plant at 6"--no mess etc.
Comments please, any problems or downsides I am missing. I would leave this exercise as late in the fall as possible, preferably just before the first heavy snow. |

You're in zone 4, and the grass uses the tops for mulch over the winter, increasing its' hardiness. If you cut it back in the fall and the grass is marginally hardy, you might lose it. Do you think you could go ahead and tie it up in the late fall, then cut it in the spring? Never tried that, so wait and see if anyone has. |
