established Pampus grass dead

hi, about 7 years ago i planted Pampas grass, and it was beautiful every year, well last spring it just did not come back,,and even tho we had a lot of snow, it was not colder then normal, and this grass has done great for years,,,this was not a gradual die off,,last summer it was full and beautiful,,and this year it just did not come back....is it really dead,,,does it go dormant? if really dead,,,how do i dig it up? (my mother wanted to dig up some much smaller grass, and the roots were just to deep....thanks
