A ''pampas grass'' with wide curly blades around outside growth

In the spring the local hardware store set up one of those temporary plant sales in the parking lot. I got a 2 gal. container hand labeled "pampas grass". The center growth had an upright habit that I would expect from such grasses. The outside had wide curly blades from last years growth. They were about 3/4 inches wide and curling outward and under.

Parts of the plant is now over six feet tall but no wide curly blades.

Any idea what I may have purchased?

Based on your description, I'm guessing you have a typical clump of pampas grass. The older/dead leaf blades will often curl and turn brown around the outside of the clump -- the leaf blades around the outside and bottom are also wider than those in the middle of the clump, and less upright.
