cut and split maiden grass in fall okay?

I'm eager to get some plants into the ground this fall so they can get established. I have one maiden grass that I'd like to split. Will i have success if i trim it back severely and then split it now in the Fall? It's about 2 years old. on another note i have bought 1-5 gallon maiden grasses and split them only to have them not grow which i found frustrating. I thought these would grow easily. Thanks! I plan to use the grass to hide utility boxes...

Warm season grasses like Miscanthus should not be divided after mid-summer, or any time during their flowering phase.
