Ornamental Grass

How to maintain this ornemental grass

We have quite a few of these ornamental grasses at our new house. I'm not sure what specific kind they are. I did not cut them down in the spring when I first moved in. All I know is now they are looking like an elephant sat in the middle of them. They are getting kind of flat looking. Now that we're going into fall, what, if anything should I do to them. How do I prevent them from getting this flattened look? Thanks.

It's hard to ID them because I can't see the flowers well enough, but I'm going to guess it's Miscanthus sinensis. If you can, post a closeup photo of the most intact flower head, and another closeup of a single blade.

Cut them down to just a few inches tall in early spring, before you start seeing new growth.
