I bought a very tired and sad pot-bound Stipa gigantea a year ago September. It survived a winter in my sandy, very well-drained holding bed. Mid-summer this year it was moved out to a more permanent position in the garden. It has put on a moderate amount of new growth (no signs blooming) and actually looks quite happy. So ....
I imagine I can consider it successful if it overwinters in its new position.
I'll let you know.

Not trying to rub it in, but on the w(b)est coast this thing grows in clay, puts out 6 foot plumes and reseeds in a controlled manner (which reminds me, I should dig up a few volunteers).

Without the blooms, no one would grow this though.

Well, If it can overwinter in Ontario, it certainly ought to overwinter down here in the banana belt. Ratz.

Hmm, sand I dont have, good drainage yes, but fall/winter here can be very wet.

After a hard cold winter with unreliable snow cover ... I can report that my Stipa gigantea successfully overwintered. It looks much happier in its new location. The heavier, slightly moister soil seems to be to its liking. Fingers crossed - it may even bloom this year!
