Indoors?

Plants that typically are able to grow outdoors in the Northern hemisphere generally make very poor houseplants. Indoor conditions just do not provide sufficient light, humidity and the proper change in temperatures as they would experience seasonally out in the wild or in the landscape. A tropical bamboo might work or some other sort of tropical grass-like plant. Humidity and light may still be an issue, however. You might get additional suggestions from the Tropical or Houseplant forums.

Just had another thought.....it is possible that horsetail, Equisetum hyemale, would work for your purposes. Although not a grass (actually more closely related to ferns), it looks a lot like a reed or rush and is an incredible hardy plant (zone 3-10) that's been around since prehistoric times. It can grow in standing water (not more than about 6 inches) but it needs pretty bright light indoors. And it would be happy if it could spend the summer outdoors.

Just don't plant in the ground - it is quite invasive.

Any herbaceous grasses that I know of wouldn't do well as an indoor plant.

However, as mentioned above, many bamboos make a fine houseplant. I've dug up pieces of my outdoor hardy bamboos Phyllostachys aureus and P. aureosulcalta and used them as indoor houseplants. They are rugged and tolerate pretty much anything except for severe drought. After they have gotten too big or I got sick of them, I just kicked them back outdoors to new spots in the garden. They are slow to establish the first year but then take off.

This would probably work fine in a decent light condition and a large container.
