| It looks like Saccharum ravennae. Do the canes holding the flower plumes extend several feet above the foliage? |

| There is a plume on every cane. The plumes are about 2' above the foliage. The foliage is starting to turn redish brown because of fall. They are about 7' tall. Thanks. hope this helps. filix. |

| I'll still go with S. ravennae. In my zone, the canes are a good 4-5 feet above the foliage. Zone 5 is near the bottom of its hardiness range, which may affect height. Use Google Images for "Saccharum ravennae" and see if the photos look like your grass. |

| I googled it. The plumes look a little different to me. But I'm sure your right. Thankyou very much. filix. |

Gee Donn ..... I think it looks much more like the plume & leave of a Miscanthus. Possibly Miscanthus saccharifloris?? The image at the link below is more what i think of when I think of Saccharum ravennae. Filix, is the plant a single clump or a 'patch'? A. |
Here is a link that might be useful: image of Saccharum sp. plume

| You may be right, A. I based it more on the nature of the culm. S. ravennae plumes change their look pretty dramatically as they age and dessicate.
Mine currently look like the one on the right, but I would expect those in zone 5 to look more like the one on the left. I don't have any M. sacchariflorus. Do they hold their plumes 2' above the foliage? |

| That picture of the miscanthus looks very much like it. The plumes are kind of curly. filix. |

| Donn, come to think of it I haven't seen that many Miscanthus saccharafloris with plumes that are quite that far about the foliage. However, in Rick Darke's book there is a photo of M. saccharafloris that looks quite similar. Also, I have several small divisions of Miscanthus sinensis Goliath that look just like the grass in filix's picture. Long gangely stems, faily wide leaves, that nice fall pumpkin colouring and upright plumes. I would definitely vote miscanthus - filix can get the species right with the growth habit ie, clumping or running. |
