How do I overwinter unplanted Mis. Gracillimus?

Last year I purchased several Miscanthus Gracillimus and they did not make it through the winter. Bluestone send me replacements, and I just learned they cannot successfully be planted in cool weather, which probably explains why they didn't make it last year. So, what do I do with them? I can I overwinter them in my somewhat heated garage (heated to 40-45)? Should I put them on my bulkhead steps, where it will get very cold but no wind? How about my basement (stays around 60 or so)?
Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
