Nursery grown pot bound plants

What is the best way to deal with grass purchased that is severely root bound?

I purchased some Miscanthus in July and three have since died. Yesterday I moved one that I have watered regularly that only had a bit of insignificant growth coming out of a lot of dead cut off blades and it looked exactly like it did when I planted it, no new roots at all. I had untangled the roots girdling around the bottom when I planted it but on some of the plants I trimmed off what was an inch thick, solid mass of hard roots. Three of these died. So, what do you advise when you buy a plant like this?

I purchased two Muhlenbergia lindheimeri week before last that went into shock a week after I put them in the ground. I unwrapped the roots girdling at the bottom when I planted. I've watered them every other day. Is this typical?
