Need Help

These grasses are one year old and I do not know what is happening. The 'Little Kittens' were half dead in June so I cut out all the bad stuff. There was quack grass in the area of these plants but they appear to be clumps that are trying to figure out what to do. Is this how these grasses look at the start? In these photos there is some sign of fall colour within the foliage but no flowers.
One 'Blue Grama'of the three planted did the same thing but did have one flower but is twice the size of the two that did well.

I have no experience with Blue Grama, so I'll go straight to M.s. 'Little Kitten.'

First, your zone is at or near the bottom of its hardiness range, and I wouldn't expect it to look like much in June. Miscanthus in general is a late starter, and should be cut back to nearly the crown before it starts regrowth in earnest. Dwarf cultivars, like 'Little Kitten,' are very susceptible to winter kill, so I would mulch the clumps before snow cover. Lay some pine boughs over them, and fill with whole leaves, and be sure to completely remove the mulch in spring.

The green foliage showing in your photos looks like something else has either seeded or crept into the clumps. It doesn't look like Miscanthus foliage.

RE: Need Help

Thanks again Donn,
I thinks it's quack grass that crept in. Will dig and replace since that grass is so invasive. There was a problem in that area and I did cut and pull the off-shoots but couldn't get under the OG to remove the quack. I just needed confirmation that it was not related to the Miscanthus. Thanks again, you have been a big help in my year one.
Will replace 'Blue Grama' x 1 and 'Little Kitten' x 3.
I also had 'Moudry' that was a poor showing so will try something else.
There was a gardening show here on TV and the consencess (sp?) was "Life's to short. If it fails move on." Good advice.

Rory
