If the dropseed is Prairie Dropseed, it might have been better to not divide it. They are slow to reestablish and it will take a division 4 or 5 years to establish but you did get a lot of plants so if you are not in a hurry, its fine. Its a very long lived, slow growing grass that doesn't die out in the center so it needs no dividing. If you do divide it, you should take at least a two inch division.

This is the worst time of year to divide warm season grasses, particularly in a colder zone like yours. Chances are you will experience a high rate of loss. There are probably 5 threads on the first page of this forum, on this very subject.

I think the guy who sold them to you mislead you just a bit. He might have been a little more specific and given more information, especially considering the time of year it is. Sounds like he made it sound like they are indestructible and you could just take them and slice them in half, no big deal. I hope it turns out fine for you. Its predicted to be an El Nina year so we are supposed to have a milder, dryer winter which might help.
