Will anything grow here?

The east side of my yard slopes down to the road about 1/2 acre. There is a very large oak tree dead center on the east slope. It sucks the water out of everything around it, especially the last two summers (serious drought!).

I've tried carolina jasmine under and near this tree (no luck!). Everyone said it should do great, it didn't. Even monkey grass, which normally is indestrucable just isn't spreading well (maybe I should give it more time).

Is there an everygreen ground cover that will tolerate these high heat, low moisture conditions. This is a fairly large area, so I don't want to use juniper because of the expense.

I dug a bed around this tree and added good garden dirt and lots of mulch. I thought that would help.

I'm having one heck of a hard time getting anything to grow here. Any suggestions??

I would love some suggestions!!!
Thanks, Michele

MS 7,
I forgot to say, believe it or not, this area gets full sun. This very tall tree with high branches (no lower branches) does not shade the area directly underneath it. It doesn't create much shade at all really. It shades the area to the north just a little, higher up on the hill (well, part-shade).

that's important and I forgot to mention it.

Do you think creeping sedum would work here? I've got some on a much smaller slope than yours, out by the street, in fairly poor soil. It needs very little attention, and does not need deep or rich soil to grow, and most importantly does not need a lot of water.

Sounds like you've got a lot of ground to cover!
