Cleaning out jasmine beds

Hello. I recently moved into a house that has some areas of jasmine (asian or star?) ground cover. The neighborhood has lots of trees so the beds are now full of leaves and debris. Can anyone suggest a way to clean this debris out other than hand picking the stuff? I have several large areas probably totaling over 3,000 sq ft. Can/should this stuff be trimmed back? If so should i use weed eater or what? i was actually considering raising my bagger mower to the highest setting and mowing it. but i cannot even to that to all areas. i am kind of a stickler about neat and clean so i want to start the spring out right with these areas. thanks in advance for any suggestions.

mike
