Ajuga Chocolate Chip, bugleweed

This plant sounded great to me until I read on one site that variegated ajugas have to be watched because they can produce a nonvariegated ajuga. This plant will eventually take over all the planting. Is Chocolate Chip considered variegated? Has any one experienced this?

RE: Ajuga Chocolate Chip, bugleweed

Hi Vermonter, I have had Ajuga Chocolate Chip in my garden for 3 seasons. It is used as a border in my garden. It has done great for me. It started out as one row of plants 3" deep. It is now 10"s deep. It is easy to move. Some clumps were fuller then others, so I just trowel up a hunk and transplant for an even amount. It blooms for a long period. The plum brown leaves keep their color too. Mine are in full sun. I have on order for this spring the green and white variegated one " Toffee Chip". Hoping this one does as well. Good Luck. I also have chocolate chip and the leaves are purple and brown so I guess you could call it variegated since it's not all one color. The color would show up more in the sunlight I think. Mine is in the shade and blooming right now. It's so pretty.
