Pachysandra - Stems Only?

Posted by vizslaboy NY (My Page) on

Several years ago I planted a large section of pachysandra on a fairly steep slope. It has filled in very nicely however this year the most uphill of the plants have lost all their leaves. I recently did my spring cleanup and removed any leaves that were covering the mulch. The stems appear healthy and stick up straight with good rigidity.

Once the growing season kicks in will the stems re-establish leaves or will I need to count on (new) fresh growth to fill in the area?

I have been away from pachy for a long time, but if the steams are healthy it could be just wind burn so they should set bud when it warms up.

Here is a link that might be useful: Propagating Perennials

Could deer or some other winter animal have been trouncing the pachies this winter? Pachysandra become brittle during the winter, and shatters when walked on. Pachies are so hardy, though that the stems should regrow. You could try adding a little fertilizer to give them a boost.
