Ground Cover to Replace Lawn

I want to replace my lawn with a flowering ground cover/vine, something I can mow back if need be. We are in such a drought here in Texas and watering restrictions are a way of life from now on I tend to believe, so if anyone could give me some suggestions it would be appreciated. I am trying to keep flower beds, trees, and small veggie garden alive, but the lawn is the water hog.

I am adding more info: the area for the ground cover is on the east side of my house so gets morning sun until around 2/3pm. There are two arizona ash trees (not fond of) and south side has a fence that chickens have access to so would not want it to be poisonous to them. Thanks Dolores
