groundcovers beneath the dogwood ...

Last summer I was digging planting beds for hostas circling a dogwood tree. Although the hostas were 3-4 feet from the tree's trunk, I came across fibrous roots beginning less than an inch below the surface. I assume the roots are from the dogwood. I was surprised; didn't think any tree had roots that close to the surface.
I had been planning on planting a groundcover beneath the tree but I don't want to jeopardize the tree's health. Are there groudcovers whose roots can "live in harmony" with a dogwood's?

Pachysandra will get along fine with Dogwoods.
