Periwinkle - - Two different outcomes

tbonejones

I planted some periwinkle in my beds last year. This spring, about 1/2 of them (on the west side of the bed) seem to be doing great...spreading, regenerating new shoots, flowering. On the other side (about 30 feet from the other side), the spreaders have turned brown and died, and all of the main plants look like they're going the same route. The whole area gets sun in the AM, dappled sun through the PM.

Any insights as to what's going on here? Are the plants that look like 'goners' truly 'gone'?
