Groundcover and care in deep shade

I have a row of huge Leeland Cyprus's behind my house that run the length of my lot (about 10 trees). It costs me a small fortune to buy mulch for this area each year and would like to know if putting groundcover under them would help cut down on the mulch. I'm a novice, so I'm not sure if you even need to mulch where there is dense groundcover.

1) Will groundcover eliminate / reduce the need to mulch.
2) What are good groundcovers for complete and utter shade, and that won't invade my lawn. I love Beacon Silver Lamium -- possibility?
3) What care do most groundcovers (or at least the ones you recommend) require besides watering?

You like Lamium, but be forwarned it likes sun/part sun not total shade. Since I have been away from perennials for decades the only thing that comes to mind for full shade is periwinkle but that is invasive, but it can be confined. Just make certain that you use compost or manure whatever you plant because you will have the Leland fighting for nutrients

Here is a link that might be useful: Propagating Perennials
