Help a newbie!

Hi,

I am trying to replant a bed of pachysandra that basically died off a few years ago. I have ripped out the stragglers and want to till the bed. The problem is there is a Japanese maple right in the middle of the bed. I am afraid that tilling the bed will damage the roots of the tree. The bed is simply overrun with roots and I have no idea which belong to the tree (which is practically a family heirloom) and which might just be leftovers from the pachysandra.

Is tilling this bed likely to do any damage to my tree?

Thanks to anyone who has an answer!
