Groundcover for clay, west side of home

Brian_Zone5

3 years ago, I planted Chocolate-Chip Ajuga in the bed alongside the west side of my home, adjacent to my neighbor's driveway. It did best last summer with more rain & cooler temperatures, but half of it died over this winter!

Should I consider Vinca minor or other groundcovers, or is groundcover in clay exposed to hot afternoon sun a lost cause in the longer run?

Thanks for any thoughts.
