Desperately Seeking The Perfect Groundcover

Ok, novice gardener here up in the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Here's my dilemna, any help would be much appreciated!

AREA TO BE COVERED

-A 50 foot x 20 foot area by a creek

-steep grade

-partial to full shade

-trees overhead so there is plenty of foliage that falls on it

-right now, it's a mess, weeds, all kinds of wild things growing (and ITS NOT PRETTY!)

-the soil seems reddish-clay like.

I need something that is hardy, will spread and keep out everything else that seems to emerge. If it's colorful, evergreen, etc, all the better but I know I may not be able to be picky.

I have checked out this forum, and here are the possibilities that seem to come up:

-lamium

-vinca major or vinca minor

-sweet woodruff

-wild ginger

-creeping raspberry

-pachysandra

-ajuga

What do you think of these possibilities? Any other ideas?

Thanks for any help you can provide!
