Scotch moss died!

Posted by growing_girl 5 (My Page) on

Last summer I planted Scotch moss between flagstones. It seemed to thrive -- spread a lot, and remained green throughout our Zone 5 winter. Then suddenly, at the end of March, it turned gray-brown and dry, and seems to have died, even though it had sufficient moisture. Why might this have happened? I'd like to replant the Scotch moss, if I can avoid this outcome in the future.

Hi GG, I'm also zone 5 and I'm finding that not all things they say will grow in zone 5 will. My Blue Star Creeper was great last year but didn't make it thru winter and ours was exceptionally mild. Neither did my Scotch Moss.

I'm in zone 5a.
I had scotch moss for 3 yrs. mine died last winter also.
It never did all that well.
I'm not going to miss it because there is something better. You might like it too.
A better plant choice for that height and color here is sedum 'acre'. It is amazingly uniform in height and stance- very attractive. It does well and does what a ground cover is supposed to do- cover!

Look it up and see what you think

I find it is tempermental here in z6 also. It seems to spread and grow where it wants to. I cant imagine it working in a walk between flag stones unless you really were not trying to do this.

We planted scotch moss three years ago between flagstones. It spread, looked beautiful, and we had no problems until this year. Some of it is fine, but much of it has turned very brown and ugly. I'm thinking I should cut out the brown parts and leave the green but really don't know what happened. We had an especially wet and nasty winter/spring this year. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I've given up on it and Irish moss as well. I've tried for years but it dies back on a regular basis. Lasts better in sun and the sections that grow out over the sidewalk last better than the sections in dirt. go figure. wish I could help.
