Creeping thyme--can it choke out grass/weeds?

There's an area on my property, next to the driveway, that isn't supposed to have any grass in it; there are citrus trees, rose bushes, Bird of Paradise plants, and various other things over there, and that's all that's supposed to be there. But in the last year or so grass and/or weeds have started appearing near the street end of this area. My gardeners have to manually remove it because I don't allow any chemicals on my property. They're tired of it! :)

Anyway, I have several varieties of creeping thyme seeds, and I'm wondering if--once established and spreading--the thyme would choke out the grass and turn the area into a lovely thyme-covered sight with no more worries about pulling unwanted grass/weeds.

If not, can anyone suggest a groundcover that would? I'd prefer a flowering, evergreen, spreading, perennial, low-growing (perhaps up to 4" or so), groundcover. I'm in the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles, which means we have NO WINTER. (Thank goodness!)
