Desperatly need help with a hillside

18 months ago my husband and I bought our 99 year old dream home in southern Kentucky. We were so thrilled with the old farm house that we didn't pay much attention to the hillside that would soon become the bane of our existance. We have battled the weeds and brambles down and now desperatly need suggestions for a ground cover that can tolerate a strong southern exposure, heat and humidity of a Kentucky summer, and cling to a steep slightly rocky hill. Cost is also somewhat of an issue since this is about an acre in area. My local garden center suggested we buy a goat!

You don't say what kind of gardeners you are. If you were edible gardeners, you could use some of the native stone to make retaining walls and terrace the slope. You could then plant some fruit trees. If you want low maintenance then look at drought tolerant groundcovers. Heather seems to perform well for me. I'm not familiar with what plants do well in Kentucky. My favorite plant research method is to find a good neighborhood with similar conditions and see what is doing well for other people locally.
